All Conference Player Commits to Keelhaulers

Mon, Apr 27, 2009 – [Men's Basketball]

Cal Maritime head men’s basketball coach Bryan Rooney has announced the signing of Foothill College forward Michael Weimer.  Michael recently finished an outstanding career at Foothill where he played for head coach Shannon Rosenberg.

“We are thrilled that Michael will be joining our program.  He played in one of the top junior college programs in the state and has a proven track record of being a winner.  Very simply, he makes positive plays on the floor. Not only has he been a double digit scorer the past two years in junior college and a prolific scorer in high school but he has done so with efficiency.  More importantly, he is an excellent student committed to getting a great degree at our school,” commented Coach Rooney.

Weimer graduated from high school at Westmont High School, where he averaged 22 points and 8 rebounds his senior year under Coach Bill Gerth.  Also during his senior year, Michael set a career high with 52 points against Evergreen High School

At Foothill, Michael established himself as one of the Owls’ main offensive threats as he averaged 11.5 points per game for his career.  At 6′5″, he possesses the ability to score inside but by evidence of his 117 made three point shots, Weimer also is able to stretch the defense. For his play, Michael was a two-time All Conference selection in the always tough Coast Conference.  He will major in business at Cal Maritime.

“We are at an exciting time in our program coming off a solid year with 17 wins and looking to take the next step.  Michael will have the opportunity to be a significant contributor in helping us do so,” concluded Coach Rooney.

Getting Ready For Hoops

Well, the Foothill JC schedule is in. Now its hitting me that there will be another crazy year of hoops. The boys shots look good, still want to work on James’s release point...but he is in the best shape ever and I expect he will kill the league the year. Michael says he is in shape..ha ha..I bet his brother would beat him in the mile. Now Sarah broke my heart this summer, said she is not interested in hoops as much as Volleyball...wants to join a Volley club team instead...arg! She has such a great shot, what she going to do with it. She will do school hoops though. Michael’s schedule James’ Schedule (not yet).

Top Rated Chaffey Loses to Foothill in OT

The 3 Stripes JC Shootout took place July 12-13 at the Galen Center on the campus of USC. Some 36 teams attended the event, including teams from both Northern and Southern California. Fresno and Foothill from the North were the only undefeated teams at the Showcase.

Ctr Terance Pellum had 22 pts, 16 rebs and 4 asts, and drained the winning free throw to lift Foothill to a 66-64 overtime win over Chaffey after rallying from an 18-point second-half deficit.

Pellum had a remarkable game, scoring 16 of his points and grabbing 13 of his rebounds after halftime. But Chaffey seemed to be in control most of the game anyway, building a 9-point halftime lead that expanded to 18 at 45-27 early in the second half.

After that, however, Foothill went on a 21-4 run to cut the margin to a single point at 49-48, and eventually tied the game at 54 with 5:22 remaining after a 3-pointer by SG Kevin Dinardi. Chaffey responded by taking a 61-56 lead after a 3-pointer by SF Nick Turner, but Foothill got a 2-point free throw by Pellum and a 3-ponter by PF Michael Weimer to tie the game at 61 with 25 seconds left and send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the first team to 5 would be declared the winner. Weimer knocked down a three to give Foothill a 64-61 lead, but SF Winston Robinson answered with a 3-pointer of his own to again tie the game at 64. Chaffey had a chance to win the game when Robinson went to the line after a rebound, but he missed the free throw and Pellum was fouled after corralling the rebound. Then Pellum went to the free throw line and knocked down the game-winning shot.
